Read Silence EP - A short (late) review

E-mail Print PDF

On the heels of the critically acclaimed Dear Science, Tv on the Radio have released Read Silence, a 3 track EP of remixed versions of Stork and Owl, Shout Me Out and Red Dress. Willie Isz starts the album with Shout Me Out, starting immediately with a pumping underground beat as Tundereadsilence opens the vocals, expanding with shimmering guitars. Rather than be hit with the usual onslaught of heavy riffing and uptempo snares as "Shout Me Out" is cried, we're treated to a disco-fuelled vocal breakdown of beatsliced and vocoded Adebimpe goodness. It's an interesting start, and certainly a good way to describe the rest of the EP. Stork and Owl opens with heartfelt piano chords and leads into...well not much really. It's effectively a long version of the original, with a few more effects, which is listenable, but not really remixing things up enough for my tastes. Thankfully, the EP closes with a standout Red Dress remix by the Glitch Mob. Techy industrial effects driven noise is the order of the day, with plenty more beatsliced Tunde vocals, and it brings strains of NIN's Year Zero Remixed to mind (never a bad thing). As a whole, the EP is great, but let down by a disappointing second track. Song selection is confusing, as there are plenty stronger tracks on Dear Science that have potential to sound incredible (DLZ, Halfway Home etc), but the artists do a stand up job of remixing the familiar and making it sound fresh, it's just a shame they couldn't get the whole of Dear Science remixed. Here's hoping they let the fans download the multitracks so that we can have a go.

TV on the Radio were joined by Katrina Ford last night at Coachella, playing a well recieved set at the festival. Plenty of Dear Science tracks, plus the usual classics got everyone bouncing as the sun went down. Pics/Bootlegs/Setlists to come...hopefully

1. Shout Me Out (Willie Isz Remix by Jneiro Jarel)

This was released on 14th April 2009; sorry the news is late, been way too busy! The EP is available on Amazon, but strangely not on iTunes or Spotify...how strange.
